RFE/RL has an excellent mission that only nonprofits can offer, yet it is financially stronger than the average nonprofit org, actually beyond the enterprise level (15 yrs of global firms experience here). I've met some of the coolest people here and learned a great deal about journalism(because I wanted to). The problems that you solve here are beyond what's in the textbooks or some regular guidance. It is a very unique environment because of the many cultures hosted here and the challenges stemming from non-democratic societies far away that we mostly safely ignore in our region.
It is the first job ever which allows me to genuinely feel good about myself because of how I contribute to society. And I am skeptical, cynical, and very investigative in nature.
Some parts of the world are just desperate for the free press and I had no idea about the RFE/RL's impact before...
It's not without problems. But I am part of the "new wave" and changing things. And so are plenty of my colleagues. I also have a generally more positive outlook and I celebrate progress which helps me.
People like to complain about management here, yet no one enables them with facts, and data to foster fast and informed decision-making.
I do deal with incompetence and lack of technical knowledge but that I was expecting prior to my coming here. In my short tenure, the org is observably changing for the better and I now know people I would even before call SME.
